Raps give Bargnani extension

Bryan Colangelo has made yet another offseason splash. On Tuesday, Andrea Bargnani agreed to a 5 year/$50 million extension. With this long term extension, the Raptors are hoping Bargnani will be a centerpiece in the future.

Bargnani, who was the 1st overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, had an excellent rookie season. Many people praised Bryan Colangelo for the excellent pick, and it looked like Bargnani had a bright future ahead of him.

The following season, Bargnani had a ridiculous sophomore slump, and his numbers, rather than up, were all down from the previous year. Many fans, enraged by his bad season, wanted Bargnani to be traded.

Despite the disappointing season last year, there was a positive note--Bargnani was back. In his 3rd year in the NBA, Bargnani had a much improved season, and his numbers were much better. Based on the performance from last year, it looks like Bargnani is here to stay, and has the possibility of having a great NBA career. Apparently, Bryan Colangelo believes the same, considering the massive extension he's thrown at Bargnani.

Overall, this was an excellent move for the future. Perhaps Bargnani is getting slightly overpaid in the first few seasons of the deal, but I think it will eventually pay off. I'm really liking what Bryan Colangelo has done this offseason, and hopefully, the Raptors will bounce back from a lackluster 2008-2009 season. Hopefully, Bargnani's will develop his game more, and he'll be able to take that next big step. I guess we'll have to stay tuned, but I believe the future is bright for the Toronto Raptors.
